I had been playing with the idea for some time that I wanted to do a mandala with an African theme, and as fate would have it, my first commission was from a man asking for a mandala for his new home, which would be decorated in African motif! The figure in the center is called a "Mbulu Ngulu", linking this world to the world of the dead, and serving in the capacity of guardian to those in this world.

"A mandala represents simultaneously what we are on the inside - our soul, and what we are on the outside - our universe, and how the two relate with balance and beauty."
